Student Directorship

The Allen Centennial Garden offers excellent professional opportunities to gain practical experience, learn career skills, and study in a premier display garden.

Each Student Director specializes in one of our management areas. Opportunities range from 3 or 12 months with some areas of specialization only being offered for 12 months.

Student Internships

The Garden is seeking energetic and motivated students to join its student team. A full list of available internship positions are listed below.

Reporting to the Garden’s leadership team of Student Directors, interns are the backbone of the Garden and its programs. Interns provide critical day-to-day support in all aspects of the Garden including horticulture, programs, events, arts, marketing, and more. Any internship may count towards Service Learning credits.

Conditions and Expectations of Student Interns

  • Pay: Volunteer basis only
  • Schedule: Flexible, with a 2–5 hours/week committment for at least one semester
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Collaborative style
  • Willing to take hands-on approach where needed
  • Available for evening and weekend events and programs as needed
  • Ability to participate in event set-up
  • Interact with the public through hands-on demonstrations and public events

Horticulture

Collections and Records Internship

  • Maintain and update plant cultural requirements and characteristics in the online database
  • Assist in managing plant inventory so each garden space is relevant
  • Update plant imagery in online database

Horticultural Display Internship

  • Rotate throughout various garden spaces, learning different horticulture techniques and garden design styles through hands-on projects and garden maintenance
  • Assist in the design and installation of seasonal garden displays

 

Sustainability and Urban Agriculture

Apiary Internship

  • Care for beehives at Allen Centennial Garden
  • Participate in honey harvest and Honey Harvest Celebration event
  • Learn to identify different bees and pollinators in the Garden
  • Opportunity to contribute blog posts about bees and pollinators

Composting and Recycling Internship

  • Manage compost and recycling program
  • Organize two related public workshops/lectures per academic year
  • Help to develop an organizational culture of recycling and reuse

 

Arts

Two Dimensional Arts Internship

  • Help put together two dimensional drop-in participatory art activities
  • Assist in running these activities when available
  • Provide two dimensional works inspired by the garden for our social media

Three Dimensional Arts Internship

  • Help put together three dimensional drop-in participatory art activities
  • Assist in running these activities
  • Enhance the garden space with three dimensional works

Chalk Artist Internship

  • Executes chalk art for Garden signage (a-frames, interpretive signs, campus sidewalks)
  • Help in the brainstorming of creative ways to bring the arts to the garden

Performing Arts Internship

  • Brings music, dance, and drama into the Garden
  • Helps put together participatory performing arts drop-in activities
  • Assist in running these activities
  • Help in the brainstorming of creative ways to bring the arts to the garden

 

Communications

Photography Internship

  • Capture compelling imagery of special events and general garden scenes
  • Assist in the curation of a comprehensive photo database for future promotional use

Graphic Design Internship

  • Generate regular marketing pieces including emails, print publications, posters, and more.
  • Design ads for print and social media as needed

 

Special Events

  • Events and Community Outreach Internship
  • Research and design events that fit the Garden’s values
  • Write event proposals that include potential date, name of event, materials, budget, and outline
  • Assist in preparation of material and facilitating special events as needed
  • Manage Welcome Tent by answering visitor questions, being friendly, welcoming and engaging
