The 'New' New American Garden

1,038 plants, 396 volunteer hours, 10 yards of mulch, 6 weeks, 3 truckloads of compost removed: all for one signature garden. 

Public gardens are what we call a “living museum” because like a traditional museum, we collect “things” – objects that allow us to tell stories. In the case of a garden, plants are our objects. What we collect and how we arrange plants are meant to not only be beautiful and compelling, but to inspire and engage our visitors in new conversations around a narrative of plants.

Millennia in the Making

As a public garden, we’re always challenging ourselves to create and present inspiring, compelling and beautiful horticultural displays. In tandem with this, we also want to tell a story because ultimately, as a living museum, our plants and garden spaces are conduits to discover deeper meaning and uncover an often hidden history behind plants and why we grow them. While gardens are constantly changing, the origins of how we garden and the design ideals we use, are taken for granted today, but have deep roots in our history. This is the story of how a garden in Italy inspired a garden in California, that in turn inspired our garden here in Madison.

We begin our story in 79 AD with the eruption of the volcano, Vesuvius. While Pompeii gets most of the attention, it also buried the town of Herculaneum, and with it, the Villa dei Papiri.

Lunchtime Wellness Series

Allen Centennial Garden is committed to reconnecting Madison residents and the UW community with nature. This summer experience a holistic wellness program that seeks to improve mental health through lunchtime offerings at the Garden. Bring your lunch and enjoy different themes that will change weekly and include topics such as yoga, mindfulness and meditation, healthy eating and art--all with a horticultural twist. All sessions are on Thursdays from 11:30am-1:30pm.
